.::SPOKEN ENGLISH CLASSES IN STATE SCHOOLS::.
Buoyed by the successful conduct of spoken English classes on an experimental basis in 40 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) schools and 36 government girls high schools in Karimnagar district , the district educational department has decided to cover 650 more government and ZP high schools during this academic year.
Accordingly, the Education Department conducted one-day orientation programme to English language teachers of Karimnagar revenue division at the Government High School in Dhangarwadi in Karimnagar on Wednesday.
Launching the programme, Collector Smita Sabharwal said that rural students had good IQ levels, but suffer due to poor communication skills and fail to compete with their urban counterparts. She asked the teachers to instill confidence among the rural students by interacting in English only.
Focus should be on interactive sessions in English covering various topics such as asking about their favourite movie, film star, what they had done in their house, favourite friends, festivals etc. She also directed the teachers to ensure that the students only speak and do not jot down notes while conducting spoken English classes. She informed the authorities to instruct all subject teachers to interact with the students in English for about 5 to 10 minutes and help motivate the children . Stating that they would soon conduct an orientation programme on spoken English classes to all the headmasters of government schools, she appealed to the teachers to strive to remove the rural and urban divide in communication skills, which were crucial for a student in his career.
DEO K. Lingaiah said that they had chalked out strategies to ensure that there were at least two classes in a week exclusively for the conduct of spoken English in all the schools. RVM project officer Ganga Reddy was also present. Earlier, the Collector released interactive spoken English material to be distributed to the teachers. She also attended a class conducted by a resource person G. Pradhyumna Kumar and appreciated the teaching methodology.
